Here is a fun way to experiment with dying eggs using food and spices you have at home. It takes a little longer but the natural colors are so subtle and beautiful.
I used wide mouth mason jars for soaking the eggs. Here is a helpful color chart I found on WholeFoods.com to get you started. I tried Green Tea, Red Cabbage, Turmeric and Chili powder to get the colors above.
Yellow — Lemon or orange peels, carrots or celery seed
Orange — Paprika, cumin, chili powder or yellow onion skins
Red/Pink — Cranberries, raspberries or radishes
Purple — Hibiscus tea
Blue/Lavender — Red cabbage, blackberries, purple or red grape juice
Green — Spinach leaves
Brown/Beige — Coffee, tea or walnuts
The method is easy peasy. Pick your coloring ingredient from the list above or try one of your own. Place in a saucepan with about 2 cups water and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 10 minutes and then stir in vinegar. You can drain through a sieve or cheesecloth to remove the solids. Once the liquid is room temperature, drop in your eggs and wait. The longer the better! I left a few overnight to get the best results.
