I have always loved Halloween. It's such a fun holiday for kids and adults alike. What's not to love about dressing up as someone else for the night and eating lots of candy? Each year before I send my little Ghosts and Goblins out to collect their loot, I always put together a little Halloween themed "pre-game" dinner. It sets the tone for the evening and I feel a little better about them consuming all the candy after they have consumed at least something that resembles a proper dinner. Now that I have a couple of pre-teens who have their own Halloween agendas, this also keeps them at the house long enough for me to snap a few pictures before they go! Bribing them by inviting their friends over for the festivities doesn't hurt!
Here is what's on the menu this year for Trick or Treat Pre Game:
These little guys have been a Halloween tradition at our house for over 10 years. They are SO easy and the kids love them. Not the healthiest dinner in the world but for Halloween they are always a hit!
Preheat oven to 375 F.
Roll 1 piece refrigerator crescent roll dough around each hot dog, creating the look of a mummy.
Arrange hot dogs on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven until crescent dough is golden brown and flaky, about 10 minutes.
Place dots of mustard on the top of each for the eyes, nose, and mouth.
Put out some small bowls of ketchup and mustard for dipping. YUM.
Pumpkin Corn Muffins
Add some fall flavor to a standard corn muffin Mix. I used the boxed Jiffy Mix, which, you can typically find for under a dollar a box. I added a crumble topping to these muffins using this recipe.
1 pkg. “JIFFY” Corn Muffin Mix
1/3 cup milk
1/2 cup pumpkin
1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
2 Tbsp. honey
Combine all ingredients together and fill muffin cups to 3/4 full. Bake at 400 for 20 minutes.
For a little bit of fruit, I assembled these clementine pumpkins.
Simply peel the skin off the clementine and pop in a little celery stalk. Done.
For these spooky treats, I took a shortcut and bought bakery cookies. 1, because, easy and 2, because they come so perfectly round and flat they are easier to cut in half and make the mouth shape. All you need for this are the cookies, some mini marshmallows and some red frosting. I used pre-sliced almonds for the vampire teeth.
Cut the cookies in half with a sharp knife.
Line the edges of both halves with the red frosting
place the marshmallows on top of the frosting to make the teeth. Make sure to press them down so they will stick and a little frosting blood oozes out.
Add the top cookie
Stick the 2 almond slices up into the top cookie for the fangs.
